The Concert Choir began as the Glenn Burleigh Workshop Choir in the Spring of 2002. The St. James Presbyterian Church Inspirational Ensemble, Greensboro, North Carolina, under the direction of Sheryl McAdoo, had chosen the music of world-renowned composer/conductor/pianist/clinician, Glenn Edward Burleigh as the focus of their annual concert. Invitations were extended to the community at-large to participate in the music workshops and concert. Mr. Burleigh came to Greensboro, spending a week as “composer-in residence” to assist Ms. McAdoo in preparing for the concert. In addition to the composer, the concert choir was accompanied by the Friendship Missionary Baptist Church Instrumental Ensemble of Charlotte, North Carolina and renowned Composer/director/organist, Solomon Sparrow, Associate Minister of Music at the Historic Vermont Avenue Baptist Church, Washington, D.C. The culminating concert was an outstanding success. Many of those who participated in the workshops and concert expressed a desire to remain together functioning as a community choir. Those dedicated and committed members have remained together, and others have joined the only choir to be named The Glenn Burleigh Concert Choir, which was sanctioned and blessed by the late Glenn E. Burleigh himself. Under the leadership of founder/choral director/pianist, Sheryl McAdoo, their repertoire, in addition to the Burleigh works, includes sacred anthems, hymn arrangements, traditional and arranged Negro spirituals, and contemporary gospel selections. Most of the music they present is by Africian-American composers. Since the inaugural concert in November 2002 at Christ United Methodist Church, Greensboro, North Carolina, and in addition to their Annual Fall Concert, the 40-plus members of The Concert Choir, representing 12 churches and 7 different denominations, has been invited to provide music and present programs for a number of churches and organizations, including: St. James Presbyterian Church Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Celebration - Greensboro, NC Temple Emmanuel Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration - Greensboro, NC Starmount Presbyterian Church Greensboro, NC Swift Street A.M.E. Zion Church Troy, NC United Methodist Church Re-dedication Service Bennett College - Greensboro, NC Dudley High School Consolidated Class Reunion Greensboro, NC On December 10, 2006, the Concert Choir with guest clinician, Dr. James Abbington, Associate Professor of Music and Worship at Candler School of Theology, Emory University, Atlanta, GA, presented a music workshop and Memorial Concert in memory of the late Dr. Charlotte L. Alston. Dr. Alston had served as Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost, as well as Chair of the Music Department at Bennett College for Women in Greensboro, North Carolina. Proceeds from the concert were presented to Bennett College for the purpose of establishing the Charlotte L. Alston Memorial Scholarship Fund for Bennett Belles majoring in Music. The unique contribution of this dedicated group of musicians is the joining together of people with different musical tastes and religious backgrounds to present quality programs of sacred and inspirational music. The Glenn Burleigh Concert Choir looks forward to a Spirit-led future spreading God’s Word through their Ministry of Music.
